Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail

Ahmad Fauzi Ismail is Professor at Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering, UTM. His research interest are in development of polymeric, inorganic and novel mixed matrix membranes for water desalination, waste water treatment, gas separation processes, membrane for palm oil refining, photocatalytic membrane for removal of emerging contaminants, development of haemodialysis membrane and polymer electrolyte membrane for fuel cell applications.
He obtained his PhD. in Chemical & Process Engineering in 1997 from University of Strathclyde and MSc. and BSc. from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1992 and 1989 respectively. His research has been published in many high impact factor journals. He also actively authored many academic books in this field which published by reputable international publishers. He is the author and co-author of over 500 refereed journals. He has authored 6 books, 45 book chapters and 4 edited books, 4 Patents granted, 16 Patents pending. His h-index is 50 with cumulative citation of over 10112.
He have won more than 120 awards national and internationally. Among the most prestigious award won is the Merdeka Award for the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Category at 4th September 2014, Malaysia’s Rising Star Award 2016 for Frontier Researcher category at 1st November 2016. He also the recipient of Innovative Action Plan for Human Capital Development Tertiary Level award at 2013 by The Ministry of Education. He has awarded Malaysia Young Scientist Award in 2000; ASEAN Young Scientist Award in 2001; the National Intellectual Property Award for two times in (Patent Category), 2009 and (Product Category), 2013; Two times National Innovation Award for (Waste to Wealth Category), 2009 and (Product Category), 2011. He also won National Academic Award (Innovation and Product Commercialization Category) on August 2013 and Malaysian Toray Science and Technology Foundation Award, on 28 November 2013, Winner of IChemE (Malaysia) Innovator of the Year Award on Oct, 2014, Top Research Scientist, Awarded by The Academy of Sciences Malaysia on Nov., 2014 and Best Fundamental Research Project awarded by Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia on 2012.
He is a Fellow of The Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Chartered Engineer in the UK (CEng) and a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (FIChemE). Ahmad Fauzi also served as the Editorial Board Members of Journal of Membrane Water Treatment, Jurnal Teknologi, Journal of Membrane Science and Research, Journal of Membrane and Separation Technology and the Advisory editorial board member of Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology.
He involved extensively in R&D&C for national and multinational companies related to membrane-based processes for industrial application. He is the founder of Advanced Membrane Technology Research Center (AMTEC) and now known as Higher Education Centre of Excellence (HiCoE). Currently Ahmad Fauzi is the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation, UTM.


Dr. Konstantinos Gkatzionis

Keynote Speaker on Health & Life Sciences
Dr. Konstantinos “Kostas” Gkatzionis is Assistant Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering, University of Birmingham (UK) since 2013 with focus on food science. Before moving to Birmingham, he has benefited from being exposed to a number of industries, universities and cultural environments throughout his career. Kostas Gkatzionis received his Bachelor’s degree in food technology from ATEI, Thessaloniki, Greece and worked as food technologist and quality control manager in food industry. He completed his Ph.D. degree at the Division of Food Sciences, University of Nottingham, UK, and has held appointments as a KTP associate with Pepsico (2008) and research associate with the University of Northampton (2009). Throughout his academic career, he has supervised >10 doctoral and >35 M.Sc. projects and post-doctoral researchers and is involved in teaching, at both undergraduate and post-graduate level, a variety of subjects including food safety, hygiene and management Masters.
Dr Kostas Gkatzionis’ teaching and research take a multidisciplinary approach in applied research addressing industrial problems and challenges as well as fundamental investigations. His group investigates areas of formulation, processing, microbiology and safety. He has been involved in a number of successful research and infrastructural grants totalling ~ 4.5million euros including Horizon 2020, UK research council funding, iNETs and industry funding. Dr Kostas Gkatzionis is member of the BBSRC Peer Review Panel (subject food safety) and his academic citizenship includes links to and collaborations with Asia and Africa as well as partnerships within the EU, materialised through joint consortia, projects and consultancy with industries, academic institutions and food SMEs.
He is also a reviewer in the following international journals: Journal of Food Composition and Analysis; Food Chemistry; International Dairy Journal; Food and Bioproducts Processing; Food Processing and Preservation; Food and Bioprocess Technology; Critical Reviews in Microbiology; International Journal of Food Microbiology; Journal of Nanobiotechnology; International Food Research Journal; Food Research International; Journal of Applied Research on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.


Profesor Madya Dr. Evan Lau Poh Hock

Keynote Speaker on Social Sciences
Evan Lau is a well-trained Universiti Putra Malaysia graduate with vast experience and research excellence covering the areas of International Economics with numerous applications of econometrics techniques. He joined the Faculty of Economics and Business Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in 2005. He is the Managing Editor of International Journal of Business and Society (IJBS). He was the Deputy Dean for Research and Postgraduate at Faculty of Economics and Business from 2016 – 2017 and also the Director of Centre for Business, Economics and Finance Forecasting (BEFfore), UNIMAS from 2013 – 2016. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Faculty of Economics, University of Cambridge from October 2013 – April 2014. As of today, his journal articles publications stand at 87. In addition, he has 84 research papers published as chapters in books, conference proceedings, working papers, newsletters and newspaper articles. His excellence in research has brought him several award winnings. These include: 3 times recipients of Young Researcher Award in UNIMAS; 2 times recipients of the Excellent Service Award, numerous research medals from several Research Expos (ITEX, UNIMAS and UPM), best papers from several conferences and Highest Impact Journal Paper Award (Social Science Cluster) for UNIMAS. He provides lectures, consultations and supervisions to students. To date, he has 59 post-graduate students under his supervision. Those who had completed include 4 Ph.D (Economics), 11 Master of Science (Economics) and 37 students from Corporate Master in Business Administration (CMBA). He has examined 36 postgraduate thesis and 136 undergraduate research projects. As an active researcher, he has been awarded a total of 27 research grants. He was listed among the Top 10% economists in Malaysia in 2008 and the Top 12% in Asia in 2012 by the Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) database. He is among the highly cited authors in UNIMAS.
